 Tissue culture Teak farming

INTRODUCTION OF TEAK:

Teak (Tectona grandis) is the most important timber tree in India especially for furniture making. The main purpose of using it is constructing furniture. It can be grown in all region in India except dry western zone. It is one of the most important hardwoods of the world and used for furniture and various purposes. The demand for this wood is growing high across the world. When you are thinking of investing in the farming to earn good revenue from the market then you need to be very conscious and make a pre plane before investing. The teak wood farming can be beneficial for you if you follow the tips of the experienced agricultural professionals.

WHY TISSUE CULTURE TEAK PLANT:-

Fast growing species of Teak Tissue culture plant: (Tectona Grandies). Tissue cultured teak plants have the same characteristics of the mother plant it has no branches and non-flaky trunk. The uniformity in height and girth, results in excellent volume and quality wood. Mother plant is selected after 60 characteristic analysis, hence the clone is highly resistant to diseases and pests. Ready to harvest from 8th year. Returns on yield would be high, as the formation is 75% heart wood and only 25% sapwood. Prevents up to 30% wind damage to other crops when chosen as a fencing plant because of its uniform growth. Can be planted throughout the year.

CLIMATIC CONDITION:-

Teak plants can grow up well in the moisturized area. You can get good quality teak woods in the area with the tropical environment. The maximum temperature of the area should be within 39- 44 o c and the lower temperature should be 13 - 17 o c. An adequate amount of rainfall is also necessary to get a good result in growing the teakwood plants. It grows well in rainfall zone of 1200-2500 mm.

SOIL:-

The teak wood plants grow well in alluvial soils that are derived from the shale, gneiss, schist, limestone and more. The soil should be well drained and the pH level of the soil should be perfect as well. The waterlogged and high pH levels of the soil are harmful to the growth of the teak wood plants. 6.5 to 7.5 pH level of the soils are ideal for farming the teak wood plants. You should check the condition of the soil it is very well to get the best result in teak wood farming successfully.

LAND PREPERATION:-

The new plants can also be propagated from Tissue culture saplings, cuttings stumps and seeds. It is usually planted when the four to six weeks old. Plough the land thoroughly and level it. The best season to plant the teak is monsoon, most probably after the first rain. Teak can be planted at 3m x 3m, 3m x 4m or 3m x 5m escapement.

IRRIGATION:-

According to the experts, the proper irrigation method can help you to get the best result in growing up teak wood plants successfully. In the irrigation process, you need to check the thinning of the trees as well. You need to give emphasize on the proper irrigation process to get the best result in farming teak wood plants. Need to check the climatic situation of the farming area. Need to check whether the developing plants get at least four months as dry. The irrigation process mainly depends on the climatic situation. The water should not be logged in the soil.

PRUNING:-

This is another important process that you need to maintain when you are cultivating the teakwood plants. Pruning is the removal of branches which increases clear bole height and reduces knots on the main stem. By removing unnecessary branches or twigs, the trees growth will concentrate around the trees main stem and its canopy. The space and size of the spacing between the teakwood plants depend on the quality and variety of the plant. You need to follow the proper process for next thinning process as well.

WEEDING:-

In a young teak plantation weeds including vines, shrubs and grass need to be cleared weekly around teak trees. These weeds compete for light, water and soil nutrients. In a mature teak plantation after the canopy closes, weeding can be done less frequently.

FERTILIZING:-

The recommended dose per tree is 60 gm of NPK in first year, 110 gm in second year and 160 gm in third year. Apply manure or compost at a dose of 10-12 kg per planting hole before planting the tree. The recommended dose of dolomite is 150-250 g per planting hole, applied at the same time as the manure or compost.

DISEASE CONTROL:-

Teak is not very susceptible to the different pests and diseases. Generally defoliators is a greatest problem. However, chemical control except in nurseries or young plantations is not practical. The life cycles of these pests are so short and follow each other so rapidly that it is not considered cost-effective. The main strategy should be on limiting the food supply by weed control in the first three years.

HARVESTING:-

To provide maximum returns, harvest teak trees when the tree is mature enough to produce good quality wood, at least 8-10 years old and the price for teak timber is high.

YIELD:-

The final production of the teakwood plants depends on the quality of the soil and the variety of the plants. You can get almost 10 to 15 CFT woods from the plants in 8-10 years. The total production of the teakwood depends on the total area of the farming. Price
